Welcome to the 17th annual Washburn University Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition. This show features a variety of artistic expressions and demonstrates the university's continued commitment to the aesthetic and cultural enhancement of its campus.
As you embark on your walking tour, please take a few minutes to experience each sculpture and note how the work complements the natural beauty of the setting. To make your visit complete, please enjoy the other outdoor sculptures in Washburn’s permanent collection.
Statement
from juror
I am honored to serve as the 2012-13 Outdoor Sculpture Competition juror. I was very impressed with the high quality of the work the artists entered. The challenge is to pick only five.
After reviewing all of the entries, I went back through them, and ultimately chose work that I thought was well-crafted, that spoke to me in some way, and which I thought would also speak to the students and faculty of Washburn University. The campus is a great space to walk around, and these sculptures should be something that catch our attention, draw us in and lead us to new ideas. The campus lends itself well to different scales and types of sculpture.
I appreciated the help of Greg Inkmann, Jeanne Bertelson and Cindi Morrison, who told me about how the sculptures were situated in previous years, and the history of the competition. We talked about possibilities for installing these pieces, how the space might work around them. Experiencing sculpture is different from other art forms. We move completely around it. At every step, the piece changes. Each view gives us something just a little bit different from the previous step. Experiencing the sculpture should be a process of discovery.
