Think Toys for Tots as you shop

Toys for Tots logoPlanning to shop on Black Friday? Be sure to include Toys for Tots on your list.

Washburn University partners with the United States Marine Corps Reserve to collect new, unwrapped toys for children (infant to age 18) and monetary donations that will be used to purchase toys. The collection will begin next week and continue through Dec. 13.

This year’s Toys for Tots Committee has set a goal of 400 toys and $1,000. Those who shop on Black Friday and bring their donation on Monday, Nov. 26 are asked to visit the Student Activities and Greek Life office, lower level, Memorial Union.

In the coming days, large Toys for Tots boxes will appear at more than 20 locations around at the Washburn campus. At least one will be stationed at Washburn Tech. Monetary lock boxes are expected in at least two locations at Washburn. The committee is hoping to set up Bod Bucks donations directly from an iCard. And an opportunity to bring toys or monetary donations to a December basketball game is being organized with Washburn Athletics.

As in past years, the Ichabod Shop will offer at 25 percent discount on all items purchased for Toys for Toys and left in the store's box.

Last year's Toys for Tots drive at Washburn yielded 386 toys and $606.63 for Topeka area children.

Those with questions about donations are encouraged to contact Toys for Tots committee co-chairs, Gary Handy, student activities and Greek life, or Julie Unruh, school of nursing. Visit toysfortots.org to learn more about the Toys for Tots program.
