Washburn University, which historically prizes access to postsecondary education, continues to develop pathways that meets students where they are in their individual preparation.  The Ichabod Success Institute is a collaborative effort of the Center for Student Success, Mabee Library, Academic Affairs, the Department of English, Student Life, and Enrollment Management at Washburn University and area high schools.

The Ichabod Success Institute is designed to assist first-time direct-from-high school students prepare for the academic rigor of and successful transition into Washburn University beginning with a 5-week residential program each July.

The program consists of coursework, activities and services across a student’s first two years of study at Washburn University that are designed to put him/her on the path to college success.  The Institute seeks to recruit students from underrepresented groups (including, but not limited to: African-American, Latino, Native-American, First-Generation and, Low-Income students) to and promote their success within the university.

Overview of the Institute

The Ichabod Success Institute is a program designed to assist new first-time direct-from-high school students prepare for the academic rigor of and successful transition into Washburn University beginning with a 5-week residential program that runs from July 3 – August 3, 2017.

The Institute is a collaborative effort of the Center for Student Success, Mabee Library, Academic Affairs, the Department of English, Student Life, and Enrollment Management at Washburn University and area high schools. It seeks to recruit students from underrepresented groups (including, but not limited to: African-American, Latino, Native-American, First-Generation and, Low-Income students) to the university. It consists of coursework, activities and services that work together to put students on the path to college success:

  • Students earn 6 credit hours in English and First-Year Experience coursework
  • Individualized study skills and learning-style assessments
  • Academic skills workshops including time management, memory and concentration, how to read a textbook, how to talk to your professors
  • Peer Mentoring
  • Introduction to key faculty and staff
  • Social and networking events including career exploration experiences and civic engagement opportunities
  • Residential Living-Learning Community

 Why Should I attend?

The transition from high school to college is challenging for all new students, and the Ichabod Success Institute gives new students a substantial advantage compared to their first-year peers. Students that complete the program enter the fall semester with:

  • Six units of coursework toward their graduation requirements
  • Strategies to both meet and surpass the academic demands of Washburn University
  • A powerful network of Faculty, Academic Advisors, Librarians and Peer Educators that endures throughout their academic tenure

Eligibility to participate in the Ichabod Success Institute requires the following:

  • Apply and gain acceptance to Washburn University
  • Complete both the 2015-16 FAFSA and the 2016-17 FAFSA
  • Apply and gain acceptance to the Ichabod Success Institute.
