Preparation of addiction professionals is becoming more important in response to the advances in research. Our curriculum is designed to prepare counselors, as well as related professionals such as social workers, criminal justice personnel, psychologists, and nurses, for effective practice based on TAP 21 competencies defined by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the federal government. Students examine the theoretical foundations and research about substance abuse and learn clinical evaluation, treatment planning, referral processes, service coordination, counseling, educational methods, documentation and professional/ ethical responsibilities.
All classes are available in a Web-based, online format. However, the Kansas BSRB currently requires that two of the skills courses be taken at the physical location of the institution in order to be eligible. Internships are arranged in the student's local community. Contact the Human Services Department for more information at human-services@washburn.edu.
Students with the equivalent of a Bachelor's degree may complete the following specific course work, which fulfills the requirements to be eligible for licensing with Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board as a licensed addictions counselor.
