Mass Media Banquet
The Mass Media Banquet is held every spring
semester to honor and acknowledge students and staff from the department.
It is produced by the PR Campaigns class. The
class chooses a unique theme each year. The class is responsible for all the
details of the banquet, from promotion, to decorations, to evaluation, and
running the actual event, all while staying within budget. This is one of the
great hands-on experiences Washburn University students receive.
The banquet showcases a keynote speaker, usually
someone from the area that can provide insight to students based on their
journey within the media industry. At the banquet seniors are recognized, as
well as scholarship recipients. An Outstanding Student Award is given to one
student from each of the four areas of emphasis. The class also chooses an
alumnus to receive the Outstanding Alumni Award and another to receive the
Alumni Rising Star Award.
Mass Media Messenger
The Mass Media Messenger is the student-produced Alumni Magazine. Students from the Feature Writing and Publication Layout & Design classes work on putting together the magazine.

On-Campus Laboratories
Mass Media majors have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in advertising, public relations, print and digital film and video at Washburn University. Instructional Media’s television studio, WUCT-CH 13 cable channel, and public TV station, KTWU, provide majors with additional experience. The video and film editing courses are taught in lab facilities in Henderson Learning Center.
