Kristen Onions

Student of the Month

The Leadership Institute's Student of the Month is Kristen Onions!

Kristen is a senior with a major in Communication and a minor in Leadership. She has served as the 2013 LCE Fellow and is currently the 2014 LCE Fellow.

Why did you join the Leadership Institute?

I joined the Institute after my mom nudged me to "go listen to the cute boy with red hair" talking at an early bird session the summer before my freshman year at Washburn University. I found that the student speaking was Shea Kirsop, "one of the most passionate leaders I've ever met." Shea encouraged me to get involved in the Leadership Institute through the PALS mentorship program. I was immediately hooked on the opportunities that WULI had to offer, and almost four years later, the Leadership Institute has continued to satisfy my need for developmental experiences and strong relationships with other "Shea" student leaders.

What is your favorite part about the Leadership Institute?

My favorite part of the Institute is the challenges that each of our student leaders are consistently overcoming and celebrating. From meeting significant Challenge Event goals, to hosting dynamic leadership labs, to pulling off Homecoming, students never fail the Institute. I believe the students exceed expectations and am very impressed and honored to have the opportunity to lead beside them as they create positive change within so many different communities.

Any advice to current Leadership Institute students?

To the students reading this who aren't as involved as they once hoped to be or who, like me four years ago, are too nervous to show up at a WULI event: you are capable. You have so much potential. The Institute, Washburn's campus, and our local community need you to take the opportunity to lead. Volunteer for the LCE, bring a friend to orientation, come hang our at one of our socials, enroll in a leadership class, and give yourself the change to develop your strengths and find your purpose. WULI is ready and waiting for you!
