Agenda Item No. V. B. 1. d.
Washburn University Board of Regents
SUBJECT: Bookstore Renovation
The Washburn Memorial Student Union recently went through a major renovation; however, the Washburn University Bookstore was not included in the project and was last renovated in 1984.
This project will update the look of the store, replace worn, broken, outdated fixtures, and provide some new fixtures. The Bookstore has been showing sales growth over the past several years due to changes in merchandising and enrollment growth making space a premium. While we are not adding any space, this renovation will take some of the existing fixtures and add more merchandising space by adding another shelf height, enabling the Bookstore to exist in the same space for several more years.
There will be new workstations spread throughout the store, a new register control island and a much needed changing room. There will be painting and carpet replacement along with the fixture enhancements. This will allow the Washburn University Bookstore to better merchandise its products, enhance customer service, increase security and provide better inventory control.
Proposals were solicited for this renovation, and on November 16, four proposals were received as follows:
Kansas Building Systems, Inc. $228,258
Showbest Fixture Corp. $247,500
Bailly Showcase & Fixture Co., Inc. $281,920
Florence General Contractor, Inc. $284,000
Based on the evaluation of the proposals submitted, we recommend a contract be warded to Kansas Building Systems, Inc. for this project.
An expenditure of $228,258.00 from account # 900200 000000 (3) 2100, Union Improvement and Expansion (Building Construction Fund).
President Farley recommends the Board of Regents approve awarding a contract to Kansas Building Systems, Inc. in the amount of $228,258.00 for the renovation of the Washburn University Bookstore.
