Agenda Item No. VI. B. 2. a.

Washburn University Board of Regents

SUBJECT: REVISION TO ACTUARIAL SCIENCE MAJOR

DESCRIPTION:

Three courses currently required for Mathematics majors in the Actuarial Science program are being replaced by three new courses. The three previously required courses are MA 310, Operations Research (3 hours), MA 376, Numerical Analysis (3 hours) and MA 241, Differential Equations (3 hours). It is proposed to replace them with MA 346, Regression Analysis (3 hours), MA 348, Time Series Analysis (3 hours), and MA 347, Stochastic Processes (3 hours). The changes are being driven by a change in the professional exam series by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) beginning 2000. We seek SOA certification as an "advanced program" in Actuarial Science at the undergraduate level. The complete proposal is attached.

The University Council approved the proposal on January 13, 2004.

The General Faculty approved the proposal on January 29, 2004.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:

No additional expenditures are required for the new courses.

RECOMMENDATION:

President Farley recommends Board of Regents approval of the revisions to the Actuarial Science Major.
