SUBJECT: AMENDMENT TO FACULTY HANDBOOK ON SCHOOL OF BUSINESS PROMOTION
The School of Business proposes amending the Faculty Handbook Section III. B. 2. 6. ii by replacing "seven years" with "five years." Approval of the proposal will result in a change in time of service for promotion to rank of associate professor from seven years to five years.
Under the current language, a faculty member normally may not be considered for promotion to associate professor until the seventh year of service, yet can be tenured earlier (in the fifth year). These should be and are often parallel processes -- someone eligible for initial tenure should also be eligible for promotion to associate professor, except in the most unusual circumstances. Therefore, the minimum seven year requirement is replaced with a five-year requirement.
The University Council approved the proposal on January 13, 2004.
The amendment was approved by the General Faculty on January 29, 2004.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: None.
President Farley recommends Board of Regents approval of the amendment to the Faculty Handbook on the School of Business promotion.
