Agenda Item No. V. B. 4.

Washburn University Board of Regents

SUBJECT: Appointment of the Dean of the School of Business

Following the promotion in the Spring, 2002, semester, of School of Business Dean JuliAnn Mazachek to President and CEO of the Washburn Endowment Association, an interim dean was appointed, and a national search was undertaken to identify a new Dean of the Washburn University School of Business. Last Spring, a search committee was formed, including representation from the faculty of the School, other University administrators (a dean from another School), alumni and the community. In conjunction with the Vice President for Academic Affairs, a position description was developed, and the position was announced via numerous vehicles early in the Fall 2002 semester.

The search committee received over 30 qualified applications from across the nation. The committee identified the top candidates, and conducted detailed reference checks of listed and unlisted references. As a result, four candidates were invited to campus for interviews, but one candidate withdrew because of complications with her spouse's employment situation.

Each candidate was interviewed over two days, providing the opportunity for them to meet a wide cross-section of the University community. Tours of the area and opportunity to meet with a realtor were also part of their campus visit. Participants in the interviews then provided their perspectives about the candidates to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, who made a recommendation to the President.

Sufficient budget resources for the FY04 budget (beyond what is in the FY03 budget) have been identified for the salary of the Dean of the School of Business.

The President's recommendation will be made to the Board of Regents in Executive Session.
