SUBJECT: Digital Planetarium Display System for the Planetarium and Observatory

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is requesting approval to purchase a digital planetarium display system for the University's Planetarium and Observatory. The digital planetarium display system will replace an older existing system with state of the art technology, further enhancing the Department's academic programs. In addition to the University's educational programs, the Planetarium and Observatory provides outreach and educational value to elementary and secondary schools, youth groups, summer camps and the general public within the region.

Proposals were submitted from the following vendors:

Vendor Total Amount

Spitz, Inc. $150,000.00

Evans & Sutherland $150,000.00

Sky-Skan, Inc. $127,500.00

The lowest-price proposal did not meet mandatory specifications and requirements. Spitz, Inc. submitted the best, overall proposal for the equipment in the package, including ease of use, technical support, and adaptability of application.

Funding for the digital planetarium display system is available in the Building and Construction Fund account from general and agency funds allocated for the project.

President Farley recommends approval to award a contract to Spitz, Inc.
