Washburn University Board of Regents
SUBJECT: Academic Initiatives
The Board met in a retreat last September with the Deans of the five academic units and the Vice President of Academic Affairs to begin a discussion about the future of Washburn's academic programs. Subsequent to that retreat, this group of academic leaders spent more time reflecting on the direction we might take in these programs. Last spring, faculty met with one another, deans and Board members to continue this dialogue. Approximately 100 faculty took part in one of five 3-hour meetings held to hear faculty views on Washburn and its future. An extensive set of notes was taken at each of these sessions, and compiled for the whole set of meetings. The
VPAA used those notes and the work previously done by the deans to draft a plan for Washburn's academic programs. This draft was reviewed extensively and improved by the deans at their retreat in July.
The draft is currently available on the University web site for review and comment. Copies have been emailed to faculty and to Board members. Faculty have been encouraged to discuss and remark on the plan. Dr. Farley and Dr. Wasserstein will meet with the faculty in "town hall meetings" on Oct. 6 and Oct. 9 to get additional feedback.
This preliminary discussion with the Board is important in this comment phase with a final draft being discussed with the Board later in the fall.
