SUBJECT: PROGRAM CHANGES IN MATHEMATICS

Description:

The Mathematics Department has proposed that Mathematics 330, Mathematical Models, be replaced as a major requirement with Mathematics 389, Senior Capstone, in both the Pure Mathematics Track and the Math for Secondary Teaching Track. The intent is to replace MA 330 (Mathematical Modeling) with MA 389 (Capstone Experience) in order to provide a better overall assessment of the distinct major tracks being Secondary Teaching of Mathematics and Pure Mathematics. This change is being implemented to address a recommendation resulting from Program Review. Because MA 330 was offered only every other year, and MA 389 is expected to be offered every year it may be necessary to hire an adjunct to teach an additional lower level course.

The Faculty Senate approved the proposal on November 14, 2005.

President Farley recommends Board of Regents approval of the proposed program changes in Mathematics pending General Faculty approval on December 8, 2005.
