SUBJECT: Faculty Personnel
At the end of the fall semester, 1999, Dr. Shel Cohen retired after 39 years of service to Washburn University. A member of the faculty since 1960, Dr. Cohen, rising from instructor to professor, served Washburn in a multitude of capacities. First and foremost, he was an outstanding, well-liked teacher who inspired excellence in his students. For 15 years, Dr. Cohen was the guiding force of the Department of Chemistry directing it along the path of growth and statewide recognition. A leader of the faculty, he served the University as Provost and Academic Vice President (1982-1984). Later as Executive Director of Planning (1991-1999), he developed the University wide Program Review process.
During his career at Washburn, Dr. Cohen collaborated professionally with scientific and educational national societies and evaluation teams. He enriched the Topeka community which selected him as advisor and board member for key organizations. Throughout his professional life, Dr. Cohen maintained interest in a supportive education of high quality for all students.
For his distinguished career in the service of and dedication to Washburn University, Dr. Cohen is recommended to be honored with the title Professor Emeritus.
President Farley recommends that the Board honor Dr. Shel Cohen with the title, Professor Emeritus.
