Agenda Item No. _______________

Washburn University Board of Regents

SUBJECT: Voluntary Phased Retirement

DESCRIPTION:

At its February 18, 1998 meeting, the Board of Regents approved the voluntary phased retirement plan under which employees meeting applicable criteria could apply for, and receive if deemed in the "best interests of the University", voluntary phased retirement from the University. Under the program approved, the successful applicant would receive a reduced work load for the term of the agreement but continue receiving employee benefits as though she or he were full-time employee of the University.

Dr. Delphine Yelen, Professor in the Department of Psychology, has requested a phased retirement program for academic year 2000-01, effective August 1, 2000. Professor Yelen would teach half-time for 2000-01 academic year and retire fully June 30, 2001.

Dr. Yelen's half-time assignment would allow the department to reduce the number of PY100 courses offered next year, but would still provide required courses for the psychology majors and the graduate program.

The department would not seek a full-time replacement for Dr. Delphine Yelen for the 2000-01 academic year since she would be available to teach the necessary required courses.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:

Dr. Yelen's half-time assignment would return $31,230 to the university.

RECOMMENDATION:

President Farley recommends that the Board approve this voluntary phased retirement request.
