SUBJECT: PROPOSED LEADERSHIP STUDIES CERTIFICATE

DESCRIPTION:

The Institute for the Study and Practice of Leadership and the general outline of the Leadership Program was approved by the Board of Regents. The Institute now proposes an interdisciplinary Leadership Studies Certificate open to baccalaureate students in all majors and degree programs.

The certificate program is designed to be completed during the time it takes to complete a baccalaureate degree. This program is intended to provide graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective in government, business, not-for-profit, educational and civic settings. Washburn graduates who complete the Leadership Studies Certificate will have successfully demonstrated:

• An understanding of the history of leadership
• The ability to think critically and analytically about the essence of leadership
• A familiarity with the philosophical, social, and psychological components of leadership
• A mastery of the communication skills necessary to lead effectively
• Experience in converting leadership theory into action

Leadership Studies Certificate Highlights

• Required specialized academic core curriculum
• Required minimum participation in leadership seminars, workshops and lecture series
• Required leadership internship experience
• Certificate credit for taking leadership roles in campus organizations
• Additional optional leadership experience opportunities

The University Council approved the certificate proposal on November 13, 2001.

The General Faculty approved the proposal on February 7, 2002.

President Farley recommends Board of Regents approval of the proposed Leadership Studies Certificate.
