Washburn University Board of Regents

SUBJECT: Purchase of Classroom Furniture

BACKGROUND:

A FY 01 capital budget request was made by Academic Affairs for $360,000 to enhance University classrooms by replacing current tablet-arm desks with more comfortable, visually appealing and ergonomically designed chairs, desks and tables that will also be ADA compliant. A total of $300,000 was set aside for the request, but the President asked for a systematic plan to be developed to upgrade the classrooms and replace existing furniture that would not result in a loss of classroom seating capacity.

The New Furniture Committee, a campus-wide group of students, faculty and staff, has been meeting since September 2000 to determine which classrooms have the greatest need for furniture replacement, and to identify acceptable types of furniture for each classroom situation. The committee decided it would be best to select a few classrooms as a pilot project to determine which types of furniture are best to accomplish the goals of comfort, aesthetics, ergonomics, and ADA compliance.

DESCRIPTION:

Five classrooms (Henderson 6 and 305, Morgan 278, Petro 204 and Garvey 231) have been chosen for the pilot project. These rooms were chosen for their campus-wide visibility, and because they routinely serve a mix of traditional and non-traditional students as well as undergraduate and graduate students. The classrooms also provide a mix of some being mediated and others being traditional seminar-style rooms.

Two of the rooms chosen will be furnished with desks and chairs, while the other three rooms will be furnished with tables and chairs. The furniture selected by the committee meets the criteria of not reducing the number of seats available in the rooms chosen for the pilot test.

Quotations were requested from nine companies with two companies responding with quotations as follows:

Krueger International $55,219.47

BA Designs, LLC 50,632.30

The recommendation is to award the contract to BA Designs, LLC, the low bidder.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:

Funding is available from account 03-00637.

RECOMMENDATION:

President Farley recommends approval to award a contract to BA Designs, LLC, for the purchase of classroom furniture for the total sum of $50,632.30.
