Posthumous Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education
The Faculty of the Department of Education, and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, request that Ms. Linda Billen be rewarded for her determination by posthumously granting her the Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education.
Ms. Billen, a non-traditional student who began her academic work at the School of the Ozarks in Fall 1974, had completed a total of 114 semester hours of course work with a cumulative GPA of 3.52. Having been approved to enroll in the final 14 semester hours in the Student Teaching Block in fall 1999, she was unable to enroll because of her illness. She remained determined that one day she would complete her degree and her teaching license, but she succumbed to her illness the week of March 6, 2000.
Ms. Billen had always desired to be a teacher. She had worked as a summer camp counselor, a student aide, an ESL teacher, a teacher's aide, a paraprofessional, and an emergency substitute while she worked toward her degree.
President Farley recommends that the Board approve posthumously awarding the Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education to Ms. Linda Billen.
