Washburn University Board of Regents
SUBJECT: Demolition of Washburn Terrace Complex
The Board voted at its October 9, 1999 meeting to "phase out the Washburn Terrace family housing on June 15, 2001 and begin immediately evaluating how to replace those units." The University then arranged for a consultant to help evaluate the Washburn University student housing market. The Board discussed the consultant's report at its May, 2000 meeting. One element of the report confirmed the Board's October 9 decision to discontinue use of the Washburn Terrace Complex, and the Board's Committee on Housing recommended demolition. Accordingly, the administration has requested and received quotations for the demolition of the units. The demolition would begin later this summer with three units at the south end to be removed first. The schedule for removing the remaining nine would be determined later by the administration with the work to be completed not later than the summer of 2001. Quotations were requested from Champney Wrecking Company and McPherson Wrecking, Inc. Only Champney chose to respond.
The low quotation is for $44,390. Funds are available in the Building Construction Fund.
President Farley recommends that the Board approve the reward of the demolition contract to Champney Wrecking Company.
