Washburn University Board of Regents
SUBJECT: Living Learning Center
The design team under the leadership of MTA Architects is at the completion of the Design Development Phase of the project. This phase includes acceptance of the preliminary plans and revised cost estimates. During this phase more detailed planning of the interior spaces and exterior finishes, has taken place, however, the general concept, location, design, function and interrelationship of spaces has remained consistent with the previous schematic design. MTA Architects, consulting engineers, university officials, and local contractors and suppliers have worked with cost estimators from Hanscomb, a Denver based cost estimating consultant working for MTA, to review the costs estimates. Those estimates took into account the local market for construction, design, materials and local suppliers. The original cost estimates for construction cost remain achievable following this more detailed review.
This project remains on schedule and within budget estimates.
The Board of Regents has previously approved the contract with MTA Architects although action is required to release funds to pay architectural services for each design phase.
President Farley recommends Board of Regents' approve the culmination of the Preliminary Design (Design Development) Phase and authorize Architects to proceed to the Working Drawing (Construction Document) phase. This approval will authorize expenditure of $395,000. From University reserves to create construction documents from which bidding may occur for the Living Learning Center Project.
