SUBJECT: High Speed Centrifuge for Microbiology Lab

DESCRIPTION:

Purchase of one Sorvall RC-5 high-speed centrifuge

The Biology Department requests permission to purchase the centrifuge as a sole-source item. Kendo Laboratory Products manufacture the Sorvall centrifuge, which sells directly to the end user. The Sorvall centrifuge is recognized within the field as the best in terms of quality, durability and versatility.

The Purchasing Agent sent a request to the e-mail listserv of the National Association of Educational Buyers (NAEB), the college and university purchasing group, asking if the Sorvall centrifuge was the best choice for the Biology Department, and if there were any other manufacturers that made a comparable centrifuge. The responses received indicated that the Sorvall has no equal in the market.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:

Funds for this purchase are budgeted in the Building and Construction Fund account 03-00301. The quoted price is $30,594.88. The cost is within the approved budget of $31,425.00.

RECOMMENDATION:

President Jerry Farley recommends the Board of Regents approve the purchase from Kendro Laboratory Products for $30,594.88.
