Agenda Item No. _______________
Washburn University Board of Regents
SUBJECT: Faculty Personnel
Professor of English and Writer-in-Residence, Tom Averill, English Department, College of Arts & Sciences, requests a leave of absence for the Spring 2002 to be a Visiting Professor at the University of Kansas. KU will pay to Washburn University Professor Averill's salary, plus fringe benefits. Washburn will pay Professor Averill on its regular monthly payroll, but a grant account established with the University of Kansas will be charged for his spring salary and benefits. Professor Averill will be on Academic Sabbatical for the Fall 2001 semester. Per University sabbatical policy, he will return to full-time service at Washburn for the 2002-2003 academic year. The leave of absence requested does not in any way conflict with the approved sabbatical.
Professor Averill's salary will be paid from budget line (19500-09-2) during his Fall 2001 Academic Sabbatical. As noted above, the 2002 Spring semester salary will be paid by the University of Kansas. A contract with KU is being prepared. Should the contract not be signed by both institutions, or should Washburn University fail to receive funds from KU, then Professor Averill will be on an unpaid leave of absence for the spring semester.
President Farley recommends that the Board of Regents approve the above leave of absence.
