SUBJECT: High Speed Centrifuge for Microbiology Lab
Purchase of one Sorvall RC-26 high-speed centrifuge.
The Biology Department requests permission to purchase a Sorvall RC-26 centrifuge from Kendro Laboratory Products. The Sorvall centrifuge is recognized within the field as the best in terms of quality, durability and versatility.
The Purchasing Agent sent a request to the e-mail listserv of the National Association of Educational Buyers (NAEB), the college and university purchasing group, asking if the Sorvall centrifuge was the best choice for the Biology Department, and if there were any other manufacturers that made a comparable centrifuge. The responses received indicated that the Sorvall is the best high-speed centrifuge on the market. This item was removed from the May board agenda while Dr. Betty Cole and Dr. John Mullican, the molecular biologist, who has joined the Washburn University faculty this semester investigated other manufacturers on word that new technology had recently become available. After additional review, the department returned with the original recommendation. It has been determined that the centrifuge proposed by Kendro Laboratories, the Sorvall RC-26 represents the best value for the Biology Department.
Funds for this purchase are budgeted in the Building and Construction Fund account 03-00301. The quoted price is $31,234. The cost is within the approved budget.
President Jerry Farley recommends the Board of Regents approve the purchase from Kendro Laboratory Products for $31,234.
