SUBJECT: Revision to Business and Financial Affairs Handbook: Sick Leave
DESCRIPTION: Many area employers extend sick leave benefits for illness or death of an employee's sibling, grand-parent or step-parent. Present University policy limits the use of sick leave for the employee and his/her immediate family, defining "immediate family": spouse, children, parents, foster parents and parents-in-law and other members of the family who reside within the home of the employee.
The administration believes our policy should be revised to extend sick leave benefit to our
employees in the event of illness or death of siblings, grandparents, step-parents and
step-children
. The Director of Human Resources proposes the following revision.
REVISE Sick Leave section 3.2.2.1 (b), page 9a:
Sick leave is normally defined as leave granted because of the illness or temporary
disability of an employee. It may be granted, however, if the employee must be
absent because of serious illness or death in the immediate family which includes (1)
spouse, (2) children and step-children, (3) parents, foster parents, step-parents, and
parents-in-law, (4) siblings, (5) grandparents and (6) other members of the family who
reside persons related to the employee by blood or marriage residing within the home
of the employee. A medical certificate may be required for any sick leave period,
and/or the returning employee may be required to undergo a physical examination by
the University physician or the employee may use his or her own physician at personal
expense.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
None
