SUBJECT: Softball Facility Improvements
Improvements are necessary to the softball complex to bring those facilities up to acceptable standards. Bids will be received on October 14 for a Softball Facility Building that will provide toilets, a Concession Stand, and Press Box for the two softball diamonds. This building will be constructed of similar materials and be of comparable quality to the Falley Field Facility. When completed, these improvements will make the women's softball facility comparable in function and quality to the men's baseball facility and by doing so satisfy a weakness identified in previous Title IX reviews.
This project has required multiple year funding. Capital funds of $132,500 were budgeted in FY99. FY99 Funds are combined with $170,000 in funds that were budgeted in the FY00 Capital Improvement Budget that became available July 1, 1999. Additionally, the demolition of Carruth Hall allows for the salvage and reinstallation of an electrical transformer that is adequate for supplying power to the entire softball complex (buildings and field lighting) as well as having capacity to supply power for lighting the tennis courts should that project receive approval in the future. Reuse of the Carruth electrical transformer represents an $8,000 project cost savings. Total project cost is estimated at $303,000.
The building is slated for completion prior to the spring softball season. Field lighting to follow as soon as possible.
Project cost is expected to be $303,000 from funds budgeted and approved in the FY99 and FY00 Capital Funds.
President Farley recommends that the Board of Regents approve the project and authorize contracts with the lowest and best bidders for the construction of a building and lighting system within a total budget of $303,000 from Capital Funds previously budgeted for the project.
