Agenda Item No._________
Washburn University Board of Regents
SUBJECT: Purchase of Sleeping Room Furniture For LLC
The University requested bids from 14 companies for the Living Learning Center and Kuehne and West Halls. Bids were received from seven companies, one of which bid only on the chair. Samples of furniture from the three vendors with the lowest bids were examined.
The desk, dresser, and bookcase recommended for purchase differ from the same items offered by the other two low bidders in that they have laminated side panels, the dresser drawers storage capacity is greater and are steel on the inside, thus making them easier to maintain. In addition to the previous advantages listed, the joinery is also such that almost any part of each of the products can easily be replaced. The chair recommended best meets specifications and is the best constructed. The bed recommended is the low bid and is the best constructed. The cost breakdown for the recommended contract awards are as follows:
Southwest Contract (furniture except beds)
Period Furniture (beds only)
There is adequate funding in the LLC project budget to cover the furniture for the LLC contracts. The Kuehne/West furniture will be funded from Building/Construction Fund - Housing Reserves, 01-84099.
President Farley recommends approval to contract with Southwest Contract of Temple, TX. for the purchase of all items, except the bed, for a total sum of $362,986.25, and to purchase the bed from Period Furniture of Madisonville, KY for the sum of $75,587.00.
