Goals
for Electronic Technology at Washburn University
(Adopted by the Electronic Technology
Committee, 4/3/95, updated 12/9/96, and 4/15/98)
Students, faculty and staff should be able
to utilize a powerful networked computing environment which supports graphical
user interfaces and permits transmission of audio, video and data.
Students, faculty and staff should have access
to emerging technologies. Curriculum, classroom, distance education and
telecommunications needs should be supported and enhanced.
Students, faculty and staff should have efficient
access to the campus telecommunications network from both on and off campus.
Students should be information literate. (Note:
Information literacy is defined here as the ability to use computers and
related telecommunications devices comfortably as a problem solving tool.
To this end, and at a minimum, students should be able to effectively use
computer-based tools for the following: mail, word processing, data analysis,
access to and searching of local and remote databases.)
Staff should have access to such technology
as required to maintain operational efficiency and institutional competitiveness.
Technological expansion and change on campus
should proceed by systematic planning, including provision for user training,
staff development, maintenance and repairs. All purchases of technology
should be evaluated with respect to such planning.
Students, faculty and staff should have access
to ongoing information technology training and educational opportunities
for users at various levels of expertise.
User services should be provided during hours
of campus operation.
