Wasserstein welcomed back returning members and introduced new members: Bob Boncella, CIS, Scott Johnson, WSA, and Robin Kruschinska, WSA.

Wasserstein gave an update on technology news since the committee's last meeting. Washburn received a Board of Education grant of $210,000 with a $105,000 match by the University. It was the largest grant given by the state. An IBM SP2 has been purchased with the funds with about $40,000 remaining. Those funds will be used for network electronics. The Departments of Music, Art and Mass Media together received a WEA grant of $25,000 which enabled them to hire a person to connect their Macs to the network. The School of Business is using some of its funds to hire a part-time person to manage their lab PCs and handle some other tasks. Both of these positions will report to the ACC where they will be included in all staff meetings and training sessions. The Media Center and the Department of Mass Media received a grant for a multimedia production studio primarily to create instructional CD-ROMs. ACC and ADP have worked closely together this summer to provide computer and network support for the VPAT area.

Dr. Farley and John Moore will attend the October 7th ETC meeting. Dr. Farley will share his views on where he would like to see technology go at WU, and Mr. Moore will discuss technology directions in the VPAT area.

Wasserstein asked if there were any additions to the "Task for the coming year list" excerpted from the 1997-98 ETC Annual Report. Two new items were mentioned: Living Learning Center technology in the proposed new dorm and development of a strategic plan for Distance Learning.

The members were reminded that three items needed action soon:

  • Campus Computer Lab Plan
  • Washburn University WWW Policy
  • Funding priorities help for the deans before funding requests are due
  • Scott Johnson and Becky Bostian, ETC members who also sit on University Council, were asked to discuss with the UC what else the ETC might do to improve communications with the Council.

    Meeting adjourned at 4:37pm.
