Undergraduate Admission Requirements
The following process must be followed to obtain Formal Admission:
1. As early as possible, complete and submit a Declaration of Major form indicating the student's desire to obtain a degree and/or a Kansas State Teacher's Certificate; majors in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education and Business Education should submit this form to the Chairperson of the Education Department; other secondary education or K-12 teaching majors should submit the form to the Chairperson of the Teaching Specialty Department. Students pursuing the Associate of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education should consult an advisor in the Education Department for other requirements.

2. Have a faculty member in the Education Department assigned as an advisor for General Education and Professional Education requirements; secondary and K-12 teaching majors will also have a Subject Major Advisor in the Teaching Specialty Department.

3. Degree candidates must file official transcripts of all prior college work with both the Education Department and the Registrar's Office; certificate-only candidates must file official transcripts only with the Education Department.

4. Submit an Application for Admission to Professional Teacher Education Programs to the Education Department: prior to submitting the application, the student must obtain the approval of the Professional Education Advisor; Secondary or K-12 Teaching majors must also obtain the approval of the Teaching Specialty Advisor(s) and the Chairperson(s) of the Teaching Specialty Department(s).

5. Present an official Kansas State Health Certificate signed by the University Physician or other licensed physician; this certificate must be obtained prior to any contact with children.
6. Complete the required number of semester hours of ED 150 and ED 151 Educational Participation in the Community (E.P.I.C.). AA students are not required to take ED 151.

7. Achieve and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher on a scale of 4.0 for each of the following: (a) general education, (b) teaching specialty or area of concentration, and (c) professional education. Achieve and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 for all coursework attempted.

8. Present a satisfactory score on each of the three sections of the Pre-Professional Skills Test (P.P.S.T) (Mathematics, Reading, and Writing); check with the Education Department Office to determine the acceptable scores; students are allowed only three tries to pass these tests. (The PPST is not required for A.A. students.)

9. Sign a statement about prior criminal activity (see application form) and submit to a KBI check.
The Undergraduate Education Admissions committee carefully considers each application and makes one of the following decisions: (a) formal admission, (b) conditional admission with the conditions and the time limit for meeting these conditions clearly stated, (c) probationary admission with the terms of the probation clearly stated, or (d) denial of admission.

The student is notified of the faculty's decision, in writing, within seven (7) days. The student may appeal any adverse decision by submitting a written petition to the Chairperson of the Education Department. Upon receipt of such a petition, the Department Faculty shall promptly review the case and inform the student of their decision.

Only students who have been formally admitted to Professional Teacher Education Programs may enroll in 300 or 400-level Professional Education courses. Associate of Arts students must be formally admitted to enroll in ED 269. This includes all students who desire Institutional Recommendation for a Kansas teaching certificate: generic degree students, transfer students, second degree students, or post-baccalaureate certificate-only students.

Degree and License Plans
The Department of Education offers the following degree programs:
Associate of Arts (A.A.) in Early Childhood Education
Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Early Childhood Education
Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Elementary Education

Satisfactory completion of each of these programs carries the Institutional Recommendation for the appropriate level of licensure by the Kansas State Board of Education. Candidates for degrees and licenses in these areas are advised by Faculty in the Department of Education.
In addition to these degrees, the Department of Education offers programs of study leading to Institutional Recommendation for the basic teaching license or license endorsement in several secondary subject areas (grades 7-12) and basic teaching license in all levels (K-12) in Health and Physical Education, Vocal and Instrumental Music, and Art.

Candidates for the basic teaching license as secondary classroom teachers or K-12 classroom teachers major in their subject field and receive the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in their subject major. To fulfill requirements for Institutional Recommendation for the teaching license, however, these candidates must also seek separate formal admission to the professional teacher education program. In addition to their subject field adviser secondary license candidates are advised by Faculty in the Department of Education regarding (a) specific general education requirements for classroom teachers, and (b) professional education requirements, including student teaching.

Because state license requirements change from time to time, all candidates for a teaching license must meet the requirements which are in place at the time they obtain formal admission to the professional teacher education program. Hence, it is very important for all candidates for teaching licenses to apply for formal admission to professional teacher education as early as possible and be assigned an adviser in the Department of Education. Information on specific license requirements, including subject field requirements, may be obtained directly from the Department of Education.
