The Department of Criminal Justice offers programs designed to meet the needs of students preparing for careers in corrections, law enforcement and security and persons already employed in these fields. Courses are presented in a number of formats designed to meet the educational needs of our student-learners.

Criminal Justice Degrees offered by Washburn University
The degrees offered by Washburn University in the criminal justice discipline include: Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with majors in Corrections, Law Enforcement or Security Administration, the Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice and the Master of Criminal Justice, with a concentration in either law enforcement or correctional administration (See Graduate Section of this catalog for further information on the Master of Criminal Justice).
The degree programs are interdisciplinary in nature and are designed to provide students with: (1) an understanding of the basic principles of the social and behavioral sciences; (2) knowledge of the functioning of the total crimi- nal justice system and the specific agencies which comprise that system; and (3) supervised experience in a criminal justice agency through an internship assignment that allows application of the broad concepts dealt with in the academic setting. Questions concerning the degrees or eligibility for enrollment should be addressed to the chairperson of the department. Student internships are available in a variety of correctional, law enforcement and security agencies, during both the summer months and the fall and spring semesters. Students are encouraged to devel- op their own internship proposals.
