in Criminal Justice
(Major in Corrections)
Washburn University offers a major in Corrections leading to the Bachelor
of Science in Criminal Justice degree. This program is interdisciplinary
with emphasis placed upon experiential aspects of the program. The degree
includes a semester internship in an agency such as a correctional institution
for adults or juveniles or a probation and/or parole agency under the
supervision of qualified personnel.
The program content is designed to provide a broad, comprehensive introduction
to the theoretical as well as practical aspects of criminal justice, with
greatest emphasis being placed on the correctional function. This program
is designed for both personnel already employed in criminal justice and
pre-service students interested in criminal justice careers.

Washburn University offers a major in Law Enforcement leading to the Bachelor
of Science in Criminal Justice degree. This program is designed to provide
a balanced introduction to all aspects of the criminal justice process
with particular emphasis on the theoretical and practical aspects of law
enforcement. This degree program also is interdis- ciplinary in its content
and utilizes courses in the social sciences, as well as those more directly
related to functions and programs in the criminal justice system. This
pro- gram is designed for both person- nel already employed in criminal
justice and pre-service students in- terested in criminal justice careers.

Washburn University offers a major in Security Administration leading
to the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice degree. This degree is
interdisciplinary in nature, emphasizing practical issues and theoretical
concepts related to security, safety, fire, crime prevention, investigations,
law enforcement and the social sciences. This program is designed to prepare
students for professional and managerial employment in security, investi-
gations, loss prevention, and risk management positions in business, industry,
government agencies and non-profit organizations. This program is designed
for both personnel already employed in criminal justice and pre-service
students interested in criminal justice careers.

Major Emphasis
A total of 36 hours must be com- pleted in each major for awarding the
BSCJ degree. (Corrections majors complete 12 hours in the correlate which
allows for 33 hours in the major.) A maximum of 48 hours of credit in
criminal justice courses may count toward graduation. Students majoring
in Criminal Justice must earn a grade of "C" or better in all
required criminal justice courses for credit.
Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice (The PLAN
Program)
The Partnership for Learning and Networking is a 2+2 Bachelors Degree
Completion Program offered by Washburn University in cooperation with
over twelve Community College partners. This high quality, flexible program
will allow you to complete a bachelor degree in two years without the
necessity of relocation through courses presented via the world wide web.
This program is de- signed for both personnel already employed in criminal
justice and pre-service students interested in criminal justice careers
who have completed an Associate degree at one of the many Community College
Plan Partners.
The Associate of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice
The Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice requires com- pletion
of 62 credit hours. The degree is designed to be used as a step toward
completion of the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice degree. Increasingly,
correctional and law enforcement agencies are recognizing the Associate
of Arts degree as a desirable or required preparation for entrance to
work in these fields. The academic work required for the degree includes
courses in sociology, psychology, and political science, in addition to
specific offerings relating to correctional and law enforcement functions.
