The Major |

A major in economics may be earned by any student who is a candidate for either the Bachelor of Arts degree or the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Bachelor of Arts in Economics The economics major in the Bachelor of Arts degree is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the principles and institutions governing economic decisions made by households, businesses, and governments. This type of knowledge, combined with studies in related areas, provides an appropriate background for employment in financial and non-financial business firms and governmental agencies. It also provides a solid basis for graduate study in economics, business and public administration, urban planning, international studies, and law. Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with a major in economics must meet the University requirements for the degree and in addition, offer at least twenty-four (24) hours in economics. At least fifteen of the twenty-four hours offered for the major must be represented by courses numbered 300 or above. The following courses must be included within the twenty-four hours: Economics 200, 201, 211, 300, and 301. A grade point average of 2.0 is required before enrollment is permitted in Economics 300 and 301. Candidates for the degree are encouraged to elect courses in mathematics, political science, history, sociology, psychology, and philosophy. Students planning graduate study in economics are strongly urged to take the BA degree with a minor field of concentration in mathematics. |
