Students entering the teacher education program are strongly
encouraged to meet with a teacher education advisor regarding the changes in
Education Programs.
Aims and Objectives Washburn
University emphasizes urban teacher education as one of its basic missions.
Courses in education are designed to help students prepare for a teaching
career at the elementary, middle, or secondary level. A second goal of the
department is to assist inservice teachers to develop professional competency
and to attain certification in additional areas.
Education Scholarship Programs
Students seeking a teaching license who have met all requirements for formal
admission to the Professional Teacher Education Program are eligible for
consideration for the following department scholarships. Scholarship
application forms are available in the Department of Education Office. The

Scholarship Departmental Honors
Departmental Honors are granted by the Faculty of the Department to majors in
Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education who complete degree
requirements with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better in required
professional education courses. In addition to Department Honors, each
semester the Faculty of the Department of Education makes the following
awards: Outstanding Early Childhood Education Student Julia Etta Parks
Award to the Outstanding Elementary Student Teacher Outstanding Secondary
Student Teacher Recipients of these awards have their names engraved on
permanent plaques in the Department of Education Office and receive individual
plaques in recognition of their outstanding teaching performance.
