The department, supported by the George I. Alden American Citizenship endowment, offers courses to fulfill general education requirements and to meet the more specialized needs of majors—those wanting a well-rounded, liberal arts education, those planning to enter graduate school in history or a related discipline, those anticipating admission to professional schools such as law, or those expecting to teach social studies at the secondary level.

The department's curriculum is intentionally multicultural, dividing into courses on the United States, those stemming from Europe, and those outside the modern western tradition. It awards four scholarships each fall for exceptional academic performance of majors and a prize each spring to the best student paper written on a Kansas subject. It sponsors the Alpha Beta Beta chapter of Phi Alpha Theta national student honorary society. Its Gleed and Harman-Lincoln lectures bring outstanding specialists to complement the expertise of the resident faculty. It cooperates with the Washburn Center for Kansas Studies to promote the study of the state's history and culture, with International Studies to globalize the curriculum, with the leadership institute and diversity studies to prepare students for success in the outside world, and with the Department of Education to prepare teachers. It maintains a large collection of historical maps and slides and provides access to numerous electronic websites for historical source and discussions.
