COURSE OF STUDY

Foundation Curriculum
The Foundation Curriculum courses are designed to prepare students for beginning generalist practice. These courses will be taken either prior to or concurrent with the Generalist Practicum. The Foundation Curriculum includes 29 credit hours of in-class instruction. Advanced Standing Program Students may have some, or all, of these courses waived, with the exception of SW 540 Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis, which is required of all students.

Eight credit hours of Generalist Practicum will be completed during the Spring and Summer semesters. During the Generalist Practicum, students will complete a minimum of 400 clock hours of supervised generalist social work experience. Advanced Standing Students may apply to have the Generalist Practicum waived. This decision is made by the Practicum Office and will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Clinical Concentration Curriculum
Following satisfactory completion of the Foundation Curriculum, students may begin their Clinical Concentration. This sequence consists of 18 credit hours of in-class instruction, including three core courses: Clinical Social Work Practice with individuals, Clinical Social Work Practice with Groups and Clinical Social Work Practice with Families. Students will complete their classroom work with six hours of Clinical Social Work Practice electives and one Clinical Seminar.

All students will complete 15 credit hours of Clinical Practicum. Full time students will complete their Clinical Practicum in two semesters, while Part Time students will spend three semesters in their Clinical Practicum. All Clinical practicum schedules require that the student complete a minimum of 16 clock hours of supervised field experience each week of the semester. A minimum of 720 clock hours are required for completion of the Clinical Practicum. The Practicum plan must be approved by the Practicum Office.

School Social Work Training
Currently, the Board of Education in Kansas does not certify School Social Workers. However, Washburn University's MSW Program has recommended an academic program designed to prepare students for a career as a school social worker. Such students should complete their Clinical Practicum in a school setting, supervised by a licensed social worker. Such placements are limited, and may not be available each year. In addition, students should complete SW 618 Social Work in the Schools, and a course in Graduate Education such as Psychology of the Exceptional Child, or an equivalent. A third elective, either SW 610 Social Work Practice with Children and Youth, or a Graduate Education course in Theories of Modern Education, although not required for the MSW degree, is also advised.

ACADEMIC RETENTION
Grades within the MSW program consist of: A (excellent performance), B (satisfactory performance), C (below standards), D (significantly below standards) and F (failure). Only Field Practicum courses are graded on a Pass/Fail basis. To remain in good standing within the MSW program, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA, and must receive a grade of P in all Practicum courses. Students who receive a grade of C in any course will be required to remediate that course, with the remediation criteria determined by the course instructor. Students who receive a grade of D in any course, other than Practicum Seminars, will be required to retake that course. Students receiving a grade of F in any course or any semester of Field Practicum or a grade of D or lower in a Field Seminar will be academically dismissed from the program. (Refer to the University Catalogue, "Repetition of Courses"). Academic Probation will be instated for any student receiving two C's or one D in any course other than the Field Practicum or Seminars. A student receiving a third C or second D will be academically dismissed from the program.

MSW DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
Completion of 70 credit hours, or its equivalent based on a combination of graduate hours and appropriate course waivers, is required for the awarding of the MSW degree. These hours include 47 credit hours (or equivalent) in the classroom and 23 credit hours, 1120 clock hours (or equivalent), in field practicum. Students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 point scale. Students will not be allowed to graduate with any unremediated C on their transcript.

Recommendation that the master's degree be granted must be made by the faculty of the Department of Social Work to the Dean of the School of Applied Studies, the University administration, and the Washburn University Board of Regents.
