The Major

NON-MUSIC MAJORS
Music courses in the Fine Arts are a vital part of the General Education program which is the foundation for all of the University's undergraduate degrees (please note the music courses which have been approved for General Education Credit). In addition, non-majors may also enroll in performance ensembles and private lessons with the consent of the instructor.

THE MAJORS
The Department of Music offers two degree programs. One program leads to the Bachelor of Music degree, with a major in music performance, or a major in music education. The second program leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in music. The Bachelor of Music degree is pursued by students planning a professional career in music performance or in music education. The Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in music is pursued by students who seek an emphasis in music within the context of a Liberal Arts education. Incoming students who seek a music degree are urged to declare their major as early as possible in order to come under music faculty advisement.

BACHELOR OF ARTS, 124 hours
The program leading to the Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Music is designed for students seeking a Liberal Education with a concentration in music. The degree does not carry departmental recommendation for a teaching certificate. Students pursuing this degree must complete the General Education requirements common to all Bachelor of Arts programs (with the addition of a correlate requirement in the Social Sciences of AN 120), and the following music requirements:

Recital Attendance
Students are required to attend 12 approved recitals and concerts each semester for the first four semesters of enrollment for a total of 48 recitals. Failure to meet this obligation will result in probationary status being imposed during the fifth semester.

General Electives, 27 hours
The remaining electives (27 hours) may be taken in any department except music. However, ensemble credit, or private lesson or Group Piano credit, beyond the eight hours required, up to 15 hours, may be counted in the block of elective hours.

BACHELOR OF MUSIC
The Bachelor of Music degree is a professional degree, designed for students who wish to pursue careers in musical performance or music education. Majors are offered in Music Performance and in Music Education. Freshmen who plan to pursue the Bachelor of Music degree should have acquired reasonable skill in musical performance before enrolling at Washburn. The following requirements must be met for the Bachelor of Music degree:

Fourth Semester Performance Examination
Students aspiring to the B.M. degree will be examined by the faculty at the end of the fourth semester of study for achievement in the following four categories:

  1. Performance proficiency
  2. Satisfactory attendance and academic performance in all music major courses
  3. Successful completion of the Rhythmic Proficiency Exam
  4. Recital attendance

Probation will be given to anyone who does not meet one or more of the four categories of achievement. If the student receives probation at the end of the second hearing the student will forfeit their status as a candidate for the degree.

Senior Recital Jury Examination
A Senior Recital is required of all candidates for the Bachelor of Music degree. For the recital to be credited toward the degree the student must be currently enrolled for credit in private lessons. At least three weeks prior to the scheduled public performance, the student will perform a complete recital before a jury com-posed of his/her private teacher and two other faculty. If the jury agrees, the student will then be allowed to present the recital publicly.

Recital Attendance
Students are required to attend 12 approved recitals and concerts each semester for the first four semesters of enrollment for a total of 48 recitals. Failure to meet this obligation will result in probationary status being imposed during the fifth semester.

Piano Proficiency
Candidates for the Bachelor of Music degree, except those majoring in piano or organ performance, are required to enroll in piano during each semester of full-time enrollment until successful completion of the piano proficiency examination.

Membership in Large Ensembles
All candidates except Piano/Organ performance majors are required to participate in two large ensembles (band, orchestra, choir, etc.) each semester of full-time enrollment. Keyboard majors and concentrations must participate in Accompanying (Music 244, 444) during each semester of full-time enrollment and must show enrollment in both large and small ensembles prior to graduation.

Music Education majors with a concentration in Keyboard may count accompanying as one of their major ensembles. Music Education majors may count only six hours of large ensemble credit toward graduation.

BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN MUSIC PERFORMANCE
The program leading to the Bachelor of Music degree with a major in Music Performance is designed for students planning a career in professional performance, college or university teaching, or private studio teaching. Entering students who plan to major in Music Performance should be prepared to demonstrate adequate performing ability upon enrolling.
