Army ROTC For those that contract into the program, the culmination of the ROTC program is a commission as an officer in either the active army or in the Army Reserve or National Guard. For those that choose to seek a commission, while participating in ROTC, students pursue an academic degree in any academic major of their choice. ROTC classes are broken into a basic course and an advanced course. All necessary ROTC books and equipment are provided to the student free of charge. For those interested in scholarship opportunities, Army ROTC awards four-year, three-year, and two-year scholarships on a competitive basis. These scholarships are competitive and pay tuition, books, university fees, and up to $3,600 a year. Air Force ROTC Funding: AFROTC can provide financial assistance for tuition, fees, and books. Scholarship amounts can vary based on an applicants college major or GPA. In addition, AFROTC offers a monthly stipend (nontaxable) that ranges from $250-$400/month, depending on class year in the ROTC program. In the Air Force ROTC, students can complete 4, 3, or 2-year commissioning programs. Course/Time Requirements: Courses vary from “0” to “3” credits each semester and cover topics in leadership, leadership applications. The AFROTC faculty will work with cross-town students to ensure the course requirements can be scheduled/completed. Currently, MS 100 is an AFTROTC introductory course available on the Washburn campus. At KU, the introductory course is available during three different days/times: Tuesday 9:30-10:20 a.m. Physical Fitness: Fitness is integral for all applicants throughout the ROTC program. Applicants need to be able to complete a minimum number of sit-ups and push-ups, along with a 1.5 mile run. Specific number of repetitions and time requirements are available at the national web site, www.afrotc.com. Eligibility to Serve in the Military: All applicants must be US citizens of good moral character. There are age limits for a person to be commissioned and vary by scholarship type or military career area. All applicants will complete a medical exam to ensure a satisfactory level of health, including height, weight, and body fat. There is no cost for the exam. Summer Requirement: AFTROTC requires 4-7 weeks of Field Training during one summer. Successful completion of the summer program is required for upper level coursework and commissioning.
