The Mission of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Exercise
Science is to engage students in an impassioned search for intellectual
growth and personal fulfillment through study, from a liberal arts perspective,
in one or more of the disciplines encompassed by the domains of health
and human movement. The Department promotes the acquisition and use of
knowledge, fosters critical thinking, participates in research, and supports
students and faculty in discipline-related service to the university,
the profession, and the global community.
The Department seeks to present a balanced physical education program
by:
- providing fundamental knowledge in the principal areas of study in
health and physical education and exercise science;
- providing an understanding of health and fitness concepts and supervising
individual evaluation of each student's health and fitness status;
- providing a wide variety of opportunities for experiences and knowledge
through instruction in aquatics, sports, dance, health and fitness activities
and related topics;
- providing comprehensive professional preparation programs which meet
or exceed state and national standards;
- providing guidance and leadership through academic advisement;
- providing an understanding of and appreciation for the value of health
and physical activity with emphasis on lifetime participation;
- providing research to enhance the knowledge base of health, physical
education and exercise science;
- providing community leadership and education services.
