Beginning courses are designed to give the student an awareness and understanding
of scientific chemical principles and problems. Advanced courses are planned
to meet the specialized needs of students interested in graduate work,
industrial chemistry, medicine, medical technology, and related professional
fields.
The program provides graduates with the appropriate knowledge and skill
foundation in preparation for careers in the chemistry workforce, graduate
study, and professional schools.
Student Learning Outcomes
Chemistry majors at Washburn University, upon graduation, are expected
to have:
- obtained a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles
of chemistry--atomic and molecular theory, reactivities and properties
of chemical substances, and the states of matter;
- obtained a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles
of the primary subfields of chemistry--analytical, biochemical, inorganic,
organic, and physical chemistry, appropriate to the degree sought;
- acquired knowledge of mathematics sufficient to facilitate the understanding
and derivation of fundamental relationships and to analyze and manipulate
experimental data, appropriate to the degree sought;
- acquired knowledge of the fundamental principles of physics;
- mastered safe chemical practices, including waste handling and safety
equipment;
- demonstrate the ability to problem solve and reason scientifically;
- acquired the ability to read, evaluate, and interpret information
on a numerical, chemical, and general scientific level;
- acquired the ability to assemble experimental chemical apparatus,
to design experiments, to use appropriate apparatus to measure chemical
composition, and properties, and to use computers in acquisition, analysis,
and presentation of data, appropriate to the degree sought;
- acquired the ability to use effectively modern instrumentation in
acquisition of information on chemical substances, appropriate to the
degree sought; and
- mastered the ability to communicate results of scientific inquiries
orally and in writing.
