LEGAL STUDIES
The Legal Studies program is approved by the American Bar Association. Students may pursue either a Bachelor of Legal Studies (BLS), an Associate of Arts (AA) degree or a Certificate of Completion. Courses concentrate on general topics such as terminology, legal research, legal writing, civil procedure, and professional ethics, complemented by various specialty courses selected by the student. Students also take correlated courses in computer use, editing and grammar and technical writing.

Student Learning Outcomes
Legal Studies students at Washburn University, upon graduation, are expected to have:

  • demonstrated proficient legal research and writing skills;
  • applied general communication and interpersonal skills in a legal setting;
  • demonstrated proficient interviewing and investigation skills;
  • developed an understanding of the organization and operation of the legal system;
  • analyzed and defended orally legal ethical obligations; and
  • demonstrated a knowledge of litigation procedures and legal terminology.
