ISS/DART Online Pedagogy Seminar

Internet Searching for Scholars

There is a hidden wealth of scholarly information available via the Internet to the researcher in the know. The Internet company BrightPlanet in the white paper, The Deep Web: Surfacing Hidden Value, estimated that for every one page a search engine could theoretically reach, there are 549 more pages out there with useful information on them that cannot be reached by search engines. Judy will demonstrate search strategies, new search engines, and specialized databases to uncover this "invisible" scholarly content. Brief handout.

Concept Mapping with Cmap Tools

A demonstration of CMap Tools, a free computer program that can be used to create concept maps, word webs, and diagrams. These concept maps may also be saved as an image file and inserted into another program, such as PowerPoint.

Today's web resources can expand the tools that students have access to without costing them a great deal of money. This also allows for a larger variety of projects to be assigned to the students irregardless of the classroom setting (face-to-face or online). In this session learn about online assignment materials (essays, original texts, still images, interactive databases, sound files, etc.) and how to integrate them into a course, web review criteria, and how to find materials that make for exciting web assignments.

Beyond Google: the Invisible Web
