Summer Stipend Support Guidelines
& Application Form

Objective:  The purpose of the summer stipends is to allow students to focus on independent, creative endeavors at Washburn University or its vicinity as a summer-long project.

The stipend for the summer is $3,000.  Upon acceptance, awardees will be given $1,000.  A second award of $1,000 will be given after a successful (as defined by the WU-CSI committee) midpoint.  A final award of $1,000 will be given after a written final report has been submitted and has been deemed acceptable by the WU-CSI committee.

Eligibility:  Requests for summer stipends must meet all of  the following criterion:

  1. The project must be original and student driven, and may not be part of another project.
  2. The student must be supervised by a faculty mentor.
  3. The undergraduate student must be matriculating.
  4. The project must be conducted locally so as to enhance the campus culture of student innovation and productivity.
  5. Projects cannot be used to earn course credit, or in conjunction with other paid employment.
  6. If previously awarded funds from WU-CSI, the student must have fulfilled all requirements of previous awards and must be in good standing, as defined by the WU-CSI Committee.
The WU-CSI Summer Stipend does not include support for students to participate in training, programs, or organized travel.

Important dates:
Applications for summer grants will not be accepted beyond April 14th. <<< NOTE THE CHANGE IN DATE
Midpoint reports due no later than July 1st.
Written final reports due no later than August 15th.

Application:
These guidelines are to help clarify the application instructions and to give insight into the decision-making process of the WU-CSI Grant Committee. Not all of these guidelines will apply to every grant request, and there may be information unique to a request that should be included in the application. Provide sufficient justification and information to avoid a delay in the approval of your application.  Please submit twelve (12) copies of the application.

COVER PAGE
The cover page should include contact information (e.g., email address, home/summer addresses and phone numbers) and academic standing (e.g., overall GPA, major(s), total hours completed and in major(s)).  This information should be provided for each undergraduate student involved in the proposal.

PURPOSE AND FUNCTION

The purpose of the WU-CSI Grant Committee is to allocate funds for the support of scholarly, creative activities of undergraduates at Washburn University. In this capacity, the WU-CSI Grant Committee will review requests for funds to cover reasonable expenses associated with scholarly activities. 
It is also the hope of the WU-CSI committee that awarded grants will instill professional behavior in students.  Behavior inconsistent with appropriate professionalism may result in the revocation of any awarded monies.

REQUEST FOR SUMMER STIPEND
Applicants should provide a synopsis (200-500 words) to include the following items: descriptive title; purpose; significance (be specific); hypothesis and methodology (if empirical); performance, presentation, or exhibit avenues to show the final work; and a statement relating the relevance of their summer project to their career objectives.

Final Report

Upon signing the application, you agree that if you accept grant funds, you will submit a brief follow-up report at the completion of the project (no later than August 15th) to the WU-CSI Grant Committee (HC 211).  In addition, those individuals supported by a WU-CSI Summer Stipend are required to participate in a WU-CSI introductory meeting as well as a public presentation at the completion of the project.
