Joint Center on Violence and Victim Studies
JCVVS Newsletter
November 2005

Dear Colleague:

I am pleased to submit to you the inaugural edition of the Joint Center on Violence and Victim Studies (JCVVS) electronic newsletter. In the past I have submitted e-mail announcements regarding various professional development courses offered by the JCVVS as needed. However, a newsletter fosters a more regular and deliberate sharing of information. In addition to announcements about upcoming professional development courses, the newsletter will feature brief articles about an array of other issues that pertain to the JCVVS, such as information about the academic programs and initiatives of the three universities, special projects undertaken by the JCVVS, and so on.

I hope you find this format of communication convenient and the content useful. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions about the Joint Center on Violence and Victim Studies.

Sincerely,

Signature of Thomas Underwood

Violence in the Workplace:
Assessment and Strategies for Community Agencies

This two-day program focuses on prevention and response to workplace violence, especially as it applies to social service organizations in the community. The program is supplemented with pre-course readings and exercises to prepare participants for an intense learning event where an actionable plan can be developed. The course is hosted by the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs on November 14-15 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Critical Analysis of Victim Assistance

The course Critical Analysis of Victim Assistance was recently hosted by the University of New Haven and the Connecticut Office for Victim Services. Professionals from Connecticut, Michigan, New York, Colorado, Vermont, Minnesota, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico attended the program. This unique course delves into issues of practice and policy with the goal of enhanced services at all levels. Geralyn O'Neil-Wild of the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence reflected, "The program has energized me to continue to look at and address policies and practices that may further re-victimize the individuals and families we serve or should be serving." The course will next be hosted by California State University, Fresno March 28-31, 2006. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.
