National Victim Assistance Academy

The JCVVS will again offer the National Victim Assistance Academy (NVAA), a foundation level professional education course. The 2006 program is scheduled for June 25-30. The universities associated with the JCVVS were involved with the Office for Victims of Crime in the early development and implementation of the program. The JCVVS has offered the NVAA without federal support for the past two years pending OCV text and program revisions - and the course has received glowing reviews by the participants:

"Without question the finest professional training that I have ever had the privilege to attend."
Cortlan Read

"This was an amazing experience including wonderful educational opportunities, pertinent and relevant information, great support and fun!

Finding and Squeezing Blood from a Turnip

This common saying is the subtitle for the Writing Effective Grants Proposals course offered May 17- 19, 2006 at Washburn University by Dr. Jay Memmott. Participants will learn to identify, profile and analyze potential funding sources as well as develop sound logic models for proposals. "The ability to write good funding proposals is essential for the survival of service agencies in today's environment" said Memmott. "The problem is that most service organizations tend to limit their funding scope and most practitioners have not had the orientation and training to really be successful."

CSUF Receives Office of Violence Against Women Grant

California State University, Fresno was among 31 schools nationwide that received grants this year from the U.S. Department of Justice Programs, Office of Violence Against Women-Campus Program. The two-year grant to Fresno State totals $199,796.

Dr. Bernadette Muscat, an assistant criminology professor and Francine Oputa, coordinator of the Women's Resource Center at Fresno State, sought the grant to target three areas that are prevalent in college-age women: domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. "Violence against women is a highly underreported crime on university campuses nationwide," said Muscat, who has 14 years of experience in victimology work and is coordinator of the Victimology Program in the Department of Criminology. "We need to create a campus climate where victims and friends of victims are knowledgeable of and comfortable with the idea of seeking assistance."

Muscat said the program will elevate the trust victims have in campus authorities, police and community agencies. The funds will be used to hire staff to address violence against women and to work collaboratively to coordinate existing services and programs for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking, including prevention, intervention and education. Also as part of the grant, University Police officers will be trained to respond effectively to domestic violence, sexual assault (child and adult), and stalking cases and to work with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered students at Fresno State.
