Steve Walker Receives 2008 National Crime Victims' Rights Week Award |
Steve Walker, JCVVS Executive Committee member
and Associate Dean of the College of Social Science
at California State University, Fresno, received the
Allied Professional Award by the U.S. Department of
Justice, Office for Victims of Crime at the awards
ceremony held on April 11, 2008 in Washington, D.C.
Congratulations Steve!!

Dan Petersen Recognized as Outstanding Continuing Educator |
Dan Petersen, JCVVS Executive Committee member
and Associate Dean of the School of Applied Studies
at Washburn University, was the recipient of the 2008
James Young Excellence in Continuing Education
Award offered by Washburn University. Dan received
the award for his consistent demonstration of
excellent teaching in noncredit professional
programs, his assistance in the development and
delivery of noncredit programs for a variety of state and
federal agencies, his regular contribution to grant
proposals, and his consultation to facilitate the
transfer of learning to other organizations throughout
the nation.

Professional Development Needs Assessment |
This past March the JCVVS posted a professional
development needs assessment online survey. The
survey was announced by way of a postcard mailing
and this e-newsletter. A total of 218 individuals
accessed the survey. The results, currently under
review, will help the JCVVS in the development and
implementation of education programs. Thanks to all
who took the time to complete the survey.

Disability "A Safety Awareness Program" RFP |
In addition to the OVC grant awarded to the JCVVS this
past fall to work with other partners in developing and
implementing a national conference on crime victims
with disabilities, grants were also awarded to
organizations for development of model programs.
SafePlace has requested the JCVVS to make the
following request for proposal announcement for
replication of its "A Safety Awareness
Program":
Request for Proposals
SafePlace, in Austin Texas is seeking applications to
fund four sites to replicate SafePlace's Disability
Services ASAP (A Safety Awareness Program).
Funding for this "Multi-Disciplinary Responses to
Crime Victims with Disabilities" initiative is part of a
cooperative agreement between SafePlace and the
U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice
Programs, Office for Victims of Crime. The primary
objectives are to; increase the reporting of crimes
against people with disabilities; develop and
implement an array of education, training and
outreach objectives to increase the safety of
individuals with disabilities; and to create a
multidisciplinary response team through community
partnerships. Eligible applicants are private and
nonprofit organizations, both community and faith-
based; colleges; universities; and public agencies
within the United States and territories currently
providing victim services directly to crime victims.
Applicants must have an existing crime victim
program to be eligible. Four (4) awards will be granted
in the amount of $85,000 each, over a project period of
24 months. A Letter of Intent to Apply (LOI) is required
and due May 9, 2008 4:00 PM CST. Completed
applications are due by May 23, 2008 4:00 PM CST.
