Ed Navone's Retirement Dinner was held April 28, 2007, at Professor Edward Navonethe Bradbury Thompson Center. Glenda Taylor, Chair, Art Dept. was hostess. There were tributes by Jerry Farley, Washburn president, Beverly Dodge Radefeld, BFA '68; Heather Kearns, BFA '01; Ron Wasserstein, VPAA, and Carol Emert, BFA '84. Ed was accompanied at the event by his sisters, Carol Navone and Joan Navone, and by Rosemary Menninger. Ed recieved a gift, a pastel portrait done by his under-graduate and graduate professor at San Jose State, J. Theodore Johnson. The protrait was given by Ed's friend, Ted Johnson, the son of Ed's mentor. Art faculty had the piece framed and presented it to Ed. Over 100 people attended to honor, thank, and congratulate Ed on such a successful teaching career. Ed will continue to be involved with Washburn Univesity in the role of "Professor at Large." By contacting the VPAA or Dean's office, faculty can ask Ed to speak to classes across the curriculum on topics as broad as opera, all things Italian, Art, aesthetics, Renaissance life, artists, and art, political expression in art, etc. He also plans to concentrate on his painting and exhibition of his artwork created during his career at Washburn.

In Memory of Justin Fujibayashi
    Senior art student Justin Fujibayashi died December 7, 2007, Henry, Justin, and Gretafrom injuries suffered in a car accident 
    VALLEY FALLS- Justin D. Fujibayashi, 25, of Valley Falls, KS., died Thursday, December 7, 2006 at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS., after receiving injuries from a car accident Monday. Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 14 at the Plymouth Congregational Church, Lawrence, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to Students Against Drunk Driving Scholarship Fund for schools in Jefferson County, KS. or Greenwood High School, AR. and sent in care of Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, PO Box 416, Oskaloosa, KS 66066.

     Justin would have graduated next week with a BFA. He is survived by his wife Greta and one-year old son, Henry.
     Justin's memorial service was held Dec 14 at the Plymouth Congregational Church, Lawrence, KS. Those who knew Justin wrote notes in a “Memory Book.”  Contribution in memory of Justin were accepted.

2006 biennial exhibit by the art faculty

An exhibit by the art faculty of Washburn University and an installation by Betsy Roe, Washburn Catron Professor, ran November-December 2006 at the Mulvane Art Museum, Washburn University. Work was included by Mike Almond, Printmaking and Drawing; Edward Navone, Painting and Drawing; Marguerite Perret, Design; Azyz Sharafy, Electronic Arts; Glenda Taylor, Ceramics; MaryDorsey Wanless, Photography; Vian-Shin “Frankie” Yee, Design and Ceramics. Also exhibiting were a number of adjunct faculty. —Read news release.

Exhibition at the Wichita Art Museum
Features Work by Washburn Faculty and Students

Prairie Earth”, an art exhibition exploring the ecology of the tall grass prairie and the impact of urban sprawl opened in the Interactive Gallery at the Wichita Art Museum Friday, August 25, and ran through August 2007.

The installation was conceived of and implemented by WU art faculty members Marguerite Perret, Betsy Knabe Roe, Glenda Taylor and Marydorsey Wanless. Work includes a large textile piece by Roe, 12 ceramic platters by Taylor, large scale photographic transparences by Wanless and Perret, and digital wallpaper, a design created from aerial views of sprawl in and around Wichita designed by Perret.

Washburn basic design students created two interactive stations for the exhibition. A magnetic tile matching game was created by design I students Cordell Anderson, Layn Balthazor, Susie Benteman, Allison Bukland, Courtney Cook, Kaylee Hesse, Quincy Johnson, Roxanne Kolbek, Michelle Lewis, Kimberly Moon, Jared Payne, Sean Petersen, Sara Pugh, Chris Rocha, Andrew Schroeder, Sarah Sims, and Scott Strickland.

Design II students created a rubbing table composed of printing plates, and accompanied by the prints they made from the plates. The students who participated are Sarah Bellinger, Jared Benson, Wayne Bowhay, Naomi Cosner, Megan Crumpton, Lindsey Cox, Chris Deines, Shawn Emery, CJ Eubanks, Emily Ferrell, Joel Kaplan, Jennifer Kemble, Jessica Langhofer, Jeremy Latham, Matthew Linn, Aja Longi, Sandra McCann, Hannah McGurk, Tony Nduati, KariAnn Poles, Cassandra Pope,
Ashley Rouse, Nick Schumacher, Amanda Schuster, Amanda Voth, Amanda Whitaker, Cameron Wrightsman and Allyson Young.
