1098-T InformationForm 1098-T is an IRS (Internal Revenue Service) form provided to students who enroll in classes at Washburn University. The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 (TRA97) established two education tax credits: The Hope Credit for students enrolled in one of the first two years of post-secondary education and who are carrying at least a half-time workload while pursuing an undergraduate degree; and the Lifetime Learning Credit for students who take one or more classes from a college/university to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree. Form 1098-T supplies a portion of the information needed by taxpayers to claim the Hope and Lifetime tax credits. By Federal law, this form needs to be mailed to the student by January 31 of each year. In addition, students are able to access the form online and print additional copies as necessary. Please note that not all of the boxes on the form 1098-T will contain numbers. Federal law requires Washburn to report either the amounts billed to students, or the amounts paid by students. Washburn has elected to report the amounts billed to students. We report the amounts billed on a calendar year basis. This means that tuition charges billed in December for the following Spring term will be reported in the calendar year they are billed, not the calendar year the classes are actually taken. Washburn will also report the amount of financial aid received that the student does not need to repay. This means that loans are not included in the reported financial aid amount. Financial aid will be reported on the 1098-T for the calendar year it is disbursed, not the year it is awarded. The form 1098-T is mailed to the current address that Washburn University has on file for the student. If the student has moved without correcting the mailing address with Washburn, s/he may not receive the form. Address information can be corrected through the University Registrar (785) 670-1074. Washburn University has contracted with Educational Computer Systems, Inc. (ECSI) to process and mail the form 1098-Ts. ECSI also maintains the website that students may access to obtain additional copies of the form for the current and previous years. Neither ECSI nor Washburn University are able to assist you in claiming the education tax credit beyond providing the form 1098-T. Please consult with your tax preparation professional for assistance in claiming the credit.
