Delinquent Account Balances Student account balances must be paid in full, or a payment plan set up by the payment deadline each term to avoid penalties. Penalties may include: 1 - A Business Office Hold, which prevents the release of grades, transcripts and diplomas. Further enrollment at Washburn University is also barred. A Business Office hold will be lifted only upon payment of the balance in full. 2 - A late charge may be added to the account. Late charges are applicable to those students who have not paid their outstanding balances or set up an installment plan before the term payment deadline. Students who do not meet this deadline will be charged a single late fee according to the number of credits in which they are enrolling. Please note that late fees are assessed based upon the number of credits enrolled in for the term, NOT the unpaid balance: Credits .....................Late Fee 3 - Although the Business Office makes every effort to contact students with delinquent balances, we may transfer unpaid accounts to a collection agency. If this happens, collection fees will increase the balance due. In addition, students may be placed in the Kansas State Setoff program, which claims state payments (including tax refunds) to settle the unpaid balance. State employees are subject to wage garnishment. Students with financial aid should check to make sure financial aid has been released to their student accounts by the payment deadline. If a student's financial aid is delayed because his/her FAFSA was not submitted in a timely manner, or other requirements to receive financial aid were not completed in a timely manner, the student will still be obligated to meet the term payment deadline. If the disbursement of financial aid to the student account is delayed through no fault of the student, the late charge will be waived: provided the student has paid any balance not to be covered by financial aid by the term payment deadline. If a student believes that s/he should not be charged a late fee, s/he may request a Late Fee Waiver. To qualify for a late fee waiver, the student must demonstrate that the failure to settle the account balance in a timely manner was due to an error on the part of Washburn University. Late fee waiver requests must be submitted in the same term in which the late fee is charged.
