Thousands of people gathered on campus Saturday to celebrate Family Day. A
picnic, carnival games, inflatable jumping houses, and of course the Ichabods
football game, made the warm fall day one to remember for many.
During halftime of the football game, the Blackwell Routh family, of Topeka,
was named 2012 Washburn Honorary Family.
Cassandra Blackwell, senior, history, nominated her parents, Jacqueline and
Chris Routh, for the recognition. Cassandra has been involved with Alpha Lambda
Delta, the Washburn Alumni Association and is the Phi Alpha Theta vice
president this year.
She nominated her parents because, she said, they have instilled in her a drive
for success and deep sense of commitment to her goals. She will graduate in May
with a bachelor of arts in history without any student loans.
Cassandra wrote in her nomination: “My family encouraged me to pursue higher
education since I was about four-years-old. I can remember roaming the campus
with my family before I even started kindergarten. I knew I wanted to be an
Ichabod because my mommy was one. … I
knew I wanted to go to Washburn because it was home. … I wanted to be Cassandra
Blackwell and not just number 150 in a class of 200 people.”
The Blackwell Routh family received a plaque and framed picture of Family Day,
a $200 gift certificate to the Ichabod Shop and tickets to the Family Day
picnic and football game to watch the Ichabods defeat Southwest Baptist
University, 42-14.
Watch for details next fall about how to nominate your family, or a family you
know for the recognition of Washburn Honorary Family.
