Residential Living employs a number of student staff members for the department throughout the year.  All of our student staff positions require full-time enrollment.  Some of the positions include:

Desk Assistant | Office Assistant | Resident Assistant

Desk Assistant

Desk Assistants (DAs) are student leaders who work at either the Living Learning Center or Washburn Village front desk.  The Living Learning Center and the Washburn Village’s front desks are open Sunday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – Midnight and Friday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 a.m.  DAs provide quality customer service to residents through such services as:

  • Distributing mail and packages
  • Taking maintenance requests
  • Renting out equipment provided at the desks
  • Answer general student questions
  • Assist Residential Living office with special projects

Office Assistant

Office Assistants (OAs) are student leaders who work in the Residential Living main office and provide quality customer service to residents and other patrons.  OAs are often times, the first point of contact for customers and are responsible for being able to answer general questions about facilities and the department, as well as, assisting with standard policies and procedures.  Othe duties of OAs include:

  • Assisting with mail
  • Answering phones
  • Assisting customers with their needs
  • Occasionally provide tours for prospective students and their families
  • Aiding professional staff with special projects

Resident Assistant

Applications: Become active on Wednesday, December 6th at 12:00 p.m. Informational meetings will be held in Late January; applications are due on February 9th at 5:00 p.m.

Resident Assistants (RAs) are student leaders who live on the premises and are responsible for approximately 50 residents for the academic year.  Some of their job responsibilities include:

  • Programming for their community according to Residential Living's 6 Core Values: Scholarship, Life Skills, Community, Diversity, Wellness, and Service
  • Serve as a campus resource to students
  • Serve on duty rotation for their complex
  • Disseminate information to residents about policies and procedures
  • Create door decorations and display cases for their community
  • Mediate roommate/suitemate conflicts

Before you begin the application process, please take the time to:

  • Answer the 2 essay questions and have them prepared and ready to attach at the end of the application

Please answer the following essay questions thoughtfully and completely. Responses should be typed and submitted on separate pages. A minimum of one page, double-spaced, per question is appropriate. In addition, complete sentences should be utilized to compose essays that clearly articulate your response.

  1. Why are you interested in serving as a Resident Assistant?
  2. Please describe the strengths you possess that would contribute to your success as a Resident Assistant. Examples of leadership experience or experience in the Residence Halls is strongly encouraged.
  • References

Two references are required. References may come from faculty, staff, organization advisors or a work supervisor. In addition, a current Resident Assistant or Desk Assistant may serve as one reference. The only people excluded from submitting a reference are members of the Residential Living professional staff (Director, Assistant Director, Village Coordinator, or Administrative Assistant). After selecting your two references, please have them fill out the attached form and return it to the Resident Living office before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 9th.
